Life Interrupted

"Even if it's never articulated, college students live with a pervasive sense or mindset that college is 'life interrupted' - a time to have fun, a period of preparation for life, a time to acquire the tools to make a mark, just not the time to leave one."

I confess that I have held this mindset and have wasted a lot of time waiting until I was "old enough" or "experienced enough." How do we combat this mindset? How do we convince ourselves and others that we have the power and ability to make an impact on this campus? What will convince us that WE are the ones who need to act?

God give us boldness and use us in our weakness. Use us in ways that will point to your power and not ours!

  1. Amen. It's easy to get ourselves caught in the passive mindset. I was reading Worldliness edited by CJ Mahaney and in a chapter by Dave Harvey about greed, he wrote about getting caught in the "I'll give tomorrow when I have more money" mindset and how if we aren't generous now, we won't be generous later. We'll just hoard it all the more.

I too find myself often putting things off when I can and just taking time to chill out even when I shouldn't be, especially now that I'm home for the summer and am waiting at home to hear back on a couple of jobs.

I think this generosity mindset applies to our time as well. We don't know how long God has planned for us here, so how can we possibly say "I'll give my time tomorrow" knowing that we will be able to? Taking time for R&R is not a bad thing (God took the 7th day and blessed it, it's now called the Sabbath), but we should take note that during the other 6 days we should be working for His kingdom. Let's not be thieves of the time we are given; it's not ours to waste.

  2. It doesn't matter who you are or what your credentials are. GOD will give you everything you need to accomplish whatever tasks are set before you, all you have to do is reach out and grab them.

  3. Yeah, brothers, we've got to be watchful for the sin of passivity. It delivers a slow death. It's stealthy. Probably one of the greatest tools of the devil against us.
